Crime thriller than Superhero

It’s kind of rare for the “World’s Greatest Detective” to actually do detective work in his on screen portrayals, but “The Batman” gives us exactly that. “Batman started as a detective,” said director Matt Reeves. “So, to find a way to go back to that, to strip away the fantasy aspect of a DC Super Hero but to still have him be aspirational, was a really exciting idea.” In “The Batman,” the titular character has yet to become the world renown superhero, and instead Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) is only a few years into his secret life as a masked vigilant. Lt. Jim Gordan (Jeffrey Wright) — still among the rank and file of Gotham City’s Police Department — ropes Batman into a case involving a serial killer called the Riddler (Paul Dano) who is bent on uncovering corruption among Gotham’s elite.

What transpires is nearly three hours of Batman solving Zodiac-like ciphers, hunting down leads and shaking up his rogues’ gallery for answers, hoping to catch the Riddler before he can strike again. Much like “Joker” (2019), the latest Batman movie is a separate entity from other recent movies in the DC Cinematic Universe. The movie is not an adaptation of any specific comic book storyline, but draws from several Batman stories, including “The Longest Halloween," "Batman: Earth One” and the video game "Batman: Arkham Origins." The movie assumes the audiences already knows the basics of Batman’s backstory and doesn’t hold the audiences’ hand in its mystery; everything is explained eventually, but viewers still need to pay attention to the smaller details as Batman rifles through clues. Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne also isn’t the typical playboy philanthropist of previous incarnations, instead coming off as a pitiful waif letting his wealth and prestige decay while throwing everything into his Batman persona. To Reeves’ credit, any second Pattinson has the cowl on, the movie makes sure to show the audience exactly why a millionaire dressed up as a bat can be downright terrifying, even in this rudimentary form. Of the supporting cast, two stand out in particular: Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman/Selina Kyle and Dano as the Riddler. This iteration of the Riddler is not the goofy joke as previously seen in "Batman Forever" and the older comics, nor the dapper gentleman of recent comic book lore. His Riddler is more Zodiac killer meets home-brewed terrorist, somewhat like "what if Batman didn't have the Wayne fortune to fuel his vigilantism?"  Kravitz's Catwoman, meanwhile, is just starting out in her career moonlighting as a part time cat burglar, much like how Bruce Wayne is just starting out as Batman. The two have a great dynamic as they struggle to work together and clash over their conflicting interests, even though she and Pattinson don't quite have the right chemistry together on screen. The rest of the cast — including Colin Farrell as the Penguin and John Turtorro as Carmine Falcone — also turn in solid performances.

Films released for Italy complete with Italian language or audio, especially for you.

Despite a strong first half, the film drags in places in the final hour of its runtime, which is four minutes short of three hours. Specifically, the final 25 minutes are completely unnecessary; whether the studio realized they made a caped crusader movie with only one impressive action scene or the filmmakers needed to justify their reported $200 million budget, it's too much. Without spoiling the details, it's a good ending but it's an ending for a different Batman movie. For fans of the Nolan trilogy or the grittier Batman comic book stories, "The Batman" is a solid watch. Just make sure to take a bathroom break beforehand. "The Batman" is currently playing in theaters and will be available to stream on HBO Max on April 17.
