Crime thriller than Superhero

It’s kind of rare for the “World’s Greatest Detective” to actually do detective work in his on screen portrayals, but “The Batman” gives us exactly that. “Batman started as a detective,” said director Matt Reeves. “So, to find a way to go back to that, to strip away the fantasy aspect of a DC Super Hero but to still have him be aspirational, was a really exciting idea.” In “The Batman,” the titular character has yet to become the world renown superhero, and instead Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) is only a few years into his secret life as a masked vigilant. Lt. Jim Gordan (Jeffrey Wright) — still among the rank and file of Gotham City’s Police Department — ropes Batman into a case involving a serial killer called the Riddler (Paul Dano) who is bent on uncovering corruption among Gotham’s elite. What transpires is nearly three hours of Batman solving Zodiac-like ciphers, hunting down leads a...

When Movies Came on Engineering Marvel and Marketing

Anyone over 30 remembers a time when it was impossible to imagine home video without physical media. But anyone over 50 remembers a time when it was difficult to choose which kind of media to bet on. Just as the “computer zoo” of the early 1980s forced home-computing enthusiasts to choose between Apple, IBM, Commodore, Texas Instruments, and a host of other brands, each with its own technological specifications, the market for home-video hardware presented several different alternatives. You’ve heard of Sony’s Betamax, for example, which has been a punchline ever since it lost out to JVC’s VHS. But that was just the realm of video tape; have you ever watched a movie on a vinyl record? Four decades ago, it was difficult for most consumers to imagine home video at all. “Get records that let you have John Travolta dancing on your floor, Gene Hackman driving though your living room, the Godfather staying at your house,” booms the narrator of Uncharted Film Streaming . Here I will inform yo...

The Batman 2022 Film Stylish, The Maximalist, and The Endless

Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne looks at the many Batman movies that came before and taunts, Mine is longer. The maximalist approach of Matt Reeves’ The Batman extends to its very title: This three-hour-long epic is a comic-book adaptation with the full menu of extras, right down to that plushy definite article padding out the name of the Caped Crusader.Less an origin story than a coming-of-age tale, The Batman captures the title character only two years into his crimefighting career. As played by the smoldering English actor Robert Pattinson, Bruce Wayne is both younger and more vulnerable than the bat-dudes we’re accustomed to seeing. He almost appears to use his pointy-eared face mask as protection from the world, and is rarely seen unmasked even when at home, where his only confidante at the gloomy Wayne family mansion is his butler Alfred motion-capture master Andy Serkis, doing what at times appears to be a Michael Caine vocal impression. When a highly placed Gotham City politician ...
