Jessica Kingdon’s documentary explores the pursuit of the “Chinese Dream,” presenting a contemporary vision of China that prioritizes productivity and innovation above all.

Being the Ricardos (Amazon Prime) Aaron Sorkin’s Hollywood historical drama follows Lucy (Nicole Kidman) and Desi (Javier Bardem) as they face a crisis that could end their careers and another that could end their marriage.

Coda This crowd-pleasing drama follows Ruby, the only hearing person in her deaf family. When their fishing business is threatened, she finds herself torn between pursuing her love of music and her fear of abandoning her parents.

Coming 2 America (Amazon Prime) Eddie Murphy returns as Akeem, who learns he has a long-lost son and must return to America to meet this unexpected heir and build a relationship. Murphy reunites with the original’s co-stars and adds to the all-star cast.

Cruella (Disney+) A live-action prequel feature film following a young Cruella de Vil, here played by Emma Stone.

Don’t Look Up (Netflix) Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence star as low-level astronomers who go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth. From “The Big Short” and “Vice” director Adam McKay, this also stars Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill and Timothée Chalamet.

Drive My Car (HBO Max) After his wife’s unexpected death, renowned stage actor and director receives an offer to direct a production of “Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima.” There, he begins to face the haunting mysteries his wife left behind. Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s drama is one of the best-reviewed movies of 2021.

Encanto (Disney+) A Colombian teenage girl has to face the frustration of being the only member of her family without magical powers. You’ve know this is streaming on Disney+ after the 49 times you’ve watched it with your kids. And no, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” isn’t even the nominated song!

The Eyes of Tammy Faye (HBO Max) An intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, starring Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield.

Flee (Hulu) The true story of a man on the verge of marriage which compels him to reveal his hidden past for the first time. The first-ever film to earn nominations for animated, documentary and international feature the same year.

Four Good Days (Hulu) A mother helps her daughter work through four crucial days of recovery from substance abuse in this drama starring Glenn Close and Mila Kunis. If you’d prefer just to hear the nominated Reba McEntire song (written by Diane Warren), listen here.

Free Guy (Disney+, HBO Max) A bank teller discovers that he’s actually a character inside a brutal, open world video game.

The Hand of God (Netflix) The story of a boy in the tumultuous Naples of the 1980s. Sorrentino’s most personal film yet is a tale of fate and family, sports and cinema, love and loss. From Oscar-winning writer/director Paolo Sorrentino.

The Lost Daughter (Netflix) A woman’s beach vacation takes a dark turn when she begins to confront the troubles of her past. Maggie Gyllenhaal directs this drama starring Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson and Peter Sarsgaard.

Luca (Disney+) On the Italian Riviera, an unlikely friendship grows between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human in this underrated Pixar gem.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines (Netflix) A quirky family’s road trip is upended when they find themselves in the middle of the robot apocalypse and suddenly become humanity’s unlikeliest last hope in this action comedy from producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (”Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “The LEGO Movie”).

Nightmare Alley (HBO Max, Hulu) Nominated for picture, cinematography, costume design, production design. Bradley Cooper plays a mysterious carny with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words, as he links with a female psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who is even more dangerous than he is in Guillermo Del Toro’s dark noir.

The Power of the Dog (Netflix) Nominated for picture, director, actor, supporting actor, supporting actress, adapted screenplay, cinematography, film editing, original score, production design, sound. A charismatic rancher inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, he torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love in acclaimed director Jane Campion’s new drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The frontrunner to win best picture, among other categories.

Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney+) In a re-imagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilization, a warrior named Raya is determined to find the last dragon.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Disney+) Shang-Chi, the master of weaponry-based Kung Fu, is forced to confront his past after being drawn into the Ten Rings organization in this Marvel adventure starring Simu Liu.

Spencer (Hulu) During her Christmas holidays with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England, Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) decides to end her decade-long marriage to Prince Charles. Summer of Soul Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) (Disney+, Hulu)
Nominated for documentary feature. Famed drummer and musical historian Questlove’s documentary about the legendary 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival which celebrated African-American music and culture and promoted Black pride and unity.

Tick, Tick...Boom! (Netflix) Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut tells the story of “Rent” creator Jonathan Larson (played by Andrew Garfield), an aspiring theatre composer endures a quarter-life crisis as he approaches 30 and does not feel close to his dream.

The Tragedy of Macbeth (Apple TV+) Nominated for actor, cinematography, production design. A Scottish lord becomes convinced by a trio of witches that he will become the next King of Scotland, and his ambitious wife supports him in his plans of seizing power. Joel Coen’s take on Shakespeare’s bloody tragedy stars Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand.

West Side Story (Disney+, HBO Max) Nominated for picture, director, supporting actress, cinematography, costume design, production design, sound. Steven Spielberg’s spirited adaptation of the 1957 musical explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds.
