The Mad Max director would ultimately be fired from the project, with Warner Bros. blaming the frequent delays in a production start, budgetary concerns and Miller's desire for multiple script rewrites. Miller would be replaced by Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis, who had previously turned down the studio's offer and was subsequently given artistic control and final cut privilege.
