Doctor Who Cast And Crew Celebrate New Announcement
Doctor Who announcement, previous cast and crew members shared their support for actor Ncuti Gatwa's impending takeover from Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who. This long-running sci-fi series has been airing since the 1960s with several different actors having had a chance to play the titular role. Whittaker currently plays the Thirteenth Doctor, having replaced Peter Capaldi after his Regeneration. 2017 marked Whittaker’s first appearance in the series as its first female Doctor, but now her stint as the Time Lord has finally come to an end. Whittaker's final Doctor Who season 13 (subtitled Flux) recently ended, but the actor still has one appearance left. Doctor Who's “Centenary Special” is said to release in the Autumn of this year, where the character will regenerate for the fourteenth time. The special's trailer sets up the return of many previous Doctor Who characters just before teasing a glowing shot of Whittaker’s regeneration. After months of speculation regarding who would be the next actor to take on this iconic role, the BBC took to Twitter yesterday (May 8) with the surprise announcement revealing that Gatwa will be leading the Doctor Who cast in season 14.

Gatwa made a much more subtle announcement on his Instagram following the BBC’s Doctor Who reveal. The Scottish actor posted an image of two hearts and a blue square emoji to his feed, a simple but clear nod to the Doctor’s inhuman biology and the blue Tardis. This post was soon followed by similar ones by other Doctor Who cast and crew, including writer Russell T. Davies and Tenth Doctor David Tennant’s daughter, Georgia Tennant. Recently, it was revealed that the cast and crew didn’t know if Whittaker was even going to get a regeneration. Current showrunner Chris Chibnall gained mixed reactions from fans, as the latest seasons of Doctor Who have been heavily criticized by some for its seeming reliance on third-act twists. This has somewhat contributed to the depleting viewership of Doctor Who in recent years, which caused some worry about Doctor Who’s season 14 renewal. Fortunately, Doctor Who is continuing, bringing about the return of Davies as showrunner who assured a bold and experimental future for the series, as well as a new and exciting era with BAFTA-winning Gatwa at the Tardis' helm.
Gatwa is the start of a new future for Doctor Who. The actor is best known as the beloved Eric Effiong in Sex Education, and after playing such a high-energy character, it’s easy to see how he will embody the bright, enthusiastic characteristics of the Doctor. Gatwa’s casting has been praised by both Doctor Who fans and those who have yet to watch it, with his fame amongst younger audiences promising to introduce a whole new generation of Doctor Who fans. It’s clear Gatwa has already been given a warm welcome into Doctor Who, as his Doctor has been bombarded with support and celebration before even making his first on-screen appearance.
