Disney Releases Corporate Social Responsibility Report For Fiscal Year 2022

The Walt Disney Company has shared its fiscal 2021 corporate social responsibility report. The data-driven report details Disney’s efforts to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion, support environmental sustainability, and charitable giving. There are three focus areas within the report, World of Belonging, World in Balance, and World of Hope.

“At Disney, creating stories and experiences that inspire and bring people together is ours. Our stories encourage children and adults to see the world in a positive light, to believe that anything is possible, and to take action to make their world a better place,” said Jennifer Cohen, executive vice president, Corporate Social Responsibility, The Walt Disney Company.

World of Belonging

In 2021, Disney launched a company-wide initiative called Reimagine Tomorrow, which is meant to advance opportunities for diverse communities, amplify underrepresented voices, and highlight the importance of representation in media and entertainment. Through the initiative, Disney started a new talent acquisition initiative at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Disney also directed more than $150 million of the annual charitable giving to programs that directly serve underrepresented communities. By 2024, Disney intends to spend at least $1 billion with diverse suppliers.

Within Disney’s Parks and Resorts, the company added a fifth key, Inclusion, to its service guidelines. The new guideline provides cast members, what Disney calls employees greater flexibility with personal expression with hairstyles, jewelry, nail styles, tattoos, and work apparel choices. Throughout the company, 46 percent of cast members self-identify as people of color in the United States, and 50 percent identify as women, globally.

World in Balance

Disney continues to make progress towards its 2030 environmental goals that are focused on reducing the company’s greenhouse gas emissions, reducing waste, sustainability, and reducing the environmental impact of consumer products. During the 2021 fiscal year, Disney announced it would build two new 75MW solar facilities that are expected to come online in 2023 near Walt Disney World. The new facilities along with the current sources will power more than 40 percent of the resort’s yearly electricity needs. Disney has also installed solar arrays at Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s private island, and Hong Kong Disneyland.

Through its theme parks and consumer goods, Disney creates a lot of trash, but the company is working toward reducing landfill waste. During the year, Disney started making plastic-free packaging for its line of classic dolls, and over 80,000 tons of total operational waste was diverted from landfills. Over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in Orlando, Florida, the company is testing a fully compostable experience at a quick-service restaurant that includes compostable plates, napkins, cups and cutlery. Organic waste from Walt Disney World is sent to an off-site composting facility where it’s turned into a nutrient-rich soil product and returned to the theme parks and resorts to fertilize plants.

At the Disney parks, resorts, and on Disney Cruise Line ships, sustainable seafood made up 95 percent of the seafood served.

World of Hope

During the fiscal year, Disney delivered more than 400,000 Disney-themed toys, hospital gowns and other items to over 500 children’s hospitals. The company also installed themed experiences in five children’s hospitals, four of which are in the United States and one is in Singapore. Throughout the year, Disney donated more than 320 tons of food to support communities impacted by the coronavirus.
